Prototype Tests for the CELESTE Solar Array Gamma–Ray Telescope
نویسندگان
چکیده
The CELESTE experiment will be an Atmospheric Cherenkov detector designed to bridge the gap in energy sensitivity between current satellite and ground-based gamma-ray telescopes, 20 to 300 GeV. We present test results made at the former solar power plant, Themis, in the French Pyrenees. The tests confirm the viability of using a central tower heliostat array for Cherenkov wavefront sampling. 1 e-mail: [email protected] 2 Visiting from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. 3 Deceased. An Overview of The VERITAS Prototype Telescope And Camera
VERITAS (the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) is the next generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory that is being built in southern Arizona by a collaboration of ten institutions in Canada, Ireland, the U.K. and the U.S.A. VERITAS is designed to operate in the range from 50 GeV to 50 TeV with optimal sensitivity near 200 GeV; it will effectively overlap with the next...
متن کاملStatus and Current Sensitivity of the CELESTE Experiment
The CELESTE experiment uses the heliostats of an old solar farm in the French Pyrenees to detect gamma ray air showers by the atmospheric Cerenkov technique. CELESTE has been operating since November 1999 with an array of 40 heliostats fully instrumented with 1GHz flash ADCs. Significant advances have been made in the detector simulations and in the data analysis techniques. We report here on r...
متن کامل0 Observations of Mkn 421 with the CELESTE Experiment
The CELESTE experiment uses the heliostats of an old solar farm in the French Pyrenees to detect gamma ray air showers by the atmospheric Cerenkov technique. Observations of the TeV blazar Markarian 421 have been made with the fully instrumented CELESTE experiment since December 1999. The detection of gamma ray emission from this source at energies greater than 50 GeV is presented here. A compa...
متن کاملBackground study for the pn-CCD detector of CERN Axion Solar Telescope
The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) experiment searches for axions from the Sun converted into photons with energies up to around 10 keV via the inverse Primakoff effect in the high magnetic field of a superconducting Large Hadron Collider (LHC) prototype magnet. A backside illuminated pn-CCD detector in conjunction with an X-ray mirror optics is one of the three detectors used in CAST to reg...
متن کاملSolar Neutron Telescope Count Peaks Not Due to Gamma Rays
The 7 March 2011 count history for the solar neutron telescope (SNT) at Mt. Sierra Negra shows two peaks of equal intensity one hour apart. Several reasons have been given for the earlier peak to be due to solar gamma rays, and it was the first experimental data of solar gamma rays reaching the ground. The significant result is solar gamma rays must have exposed aircraft flying at low latitudes...
